“Hasta que la dignidad se haga costumbre”: El despertar de Chile

El 18 de Octubre, 2019, después de semanas de evasiones masivas en el metro de Santiago, se produjo una movilización de protestas en las calles sin precedentes desde la vuelta a la democracia (1990). La respuesta del gobierno fue la más brutal represión. Las causas del “estallido” son múltiples pero todas apuntan a una precarización de la vida, producto del neoliberalismo impuesto durante la dictadura de Pinochet (1973-1990) y arraigado durante 30 años de democracia.
Las demandas apuntan a cambios estructurales: distribuir de forma más equitativa la riqueza, democratizar el poder político, incluir a los pueblos indígenas en la constitución y GARANTIZAR derechos sociales básicos de forma justa: salud, agua, educación, jubilación y vivienda.
En respuesta, la clase política y el gobierno acordaron realizar un plebiscito para aprobar o rechazar la idea de crear una nueva constitución. La crisis del Covid-19 ha obligado a suspender las protestas y también a aplazar el plebiscito hasta octubre de 2020.

“Until dignity becomes a habit”: The awakening of Chile
On October 18, 2019, after weeks of mass evasions of the subway’s ticket in Santiago, people took to the streets to protest in what became the biggest mobilization since the return to democracy (1990). The government’s response was the most brutal repression. The causes of the outbreak are multiple but all point to a precariousness of life, product of the neoliberal system imposed during the Pinochet dictatorship (1973-1990) and rooted over 30 years of democracy.
People’s demands point to structural changes: a more equitable distribution of wealth, the democratization of political power, the inclusion of Indigenous peoples in the constitution, and the WARRANTY of basic social rights in a just manner: health, water, education, retirement, and housing.
In response, the political class and the government agreed to hold a referendum to approve or reject the idea of creating a new constitution. The Covid-19 crisis has made it difficult to continue with massive protests, and due to it the referendum was postponed until October 2020.
In this node you will find testimonies of this whole process; subjective voices woven by a collective experience. These videos show different struggles that, thanks to the social revolt, have come together to put pressure on the government, the powers of the State and the corporations. This node gathers fragments of a memory that will go down in history as the moment when the entire territory cried out: Until dignity becomes a habit!
